When feeling anxious, overwhelmed or stressed most people turn to food for comfort. We crave and seek pleasure, and food is the pleasure for a lot of us in the midst of stress.
This cycle of overeating is what causes us to gain weight and feel guilty about it. We then have even more stress because of the weight gain. It's a terrible cycle many people are in.
But there is a way you can learn to steer away from the food. What if instead of food snacking, you wellness snacked.
What does this mean?
This means when you're feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed you reach for a book instead of the bag of chips, or you take 10 minutes to meditate or just focus on your breathing, instead of reaching for the pint of ice cream. You could go for a walk or exercise even just do a few push-ups or squats. Replacing one negative action for the other positive action is the key. Over time your body will crave these positive actions and new habits because you feel good doing them. These positive actions release the same feel-good hormones and have the same physiological as the negative actions. It's a little more challenging but more rewarding.
"Wellness snacking" stressed or not can be a life-changing habit. These little positive actions you do daily will help you grow better as a person. So have a plan ahead of time for how you will respond when you face stress, depression or anxiety. You can make better choices that can get you closer to your health goals.
